FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) is a relatively new concept in marketing that was previously examined primarily in the fields of cognitive science and psychology. In these disciplines, FOMO is often addressed as a negative phenomenon requiring correction. In recent years, as FOMO has entered management and marketing discussions, scholars in these fields have recognized its potential to positively influence consumer behavior. This positive behavior holds the potential for mutual benefit between organizations and consumers. The aim of this research is to identify and formulate the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) model, its antecedents, and consequences using a meta-analysis method. In the first stage, 920 articles from reputable scientific databases such as Scopus, Elsevier, and Sage were selected, and through screening, 25 articles related to FOMO and consumer behavior were chosen by using a judgmental method. This research was conducted through qualitative research methods. Given that the articles were quantitative, the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) model, its antecedents, and consequences were derived using meta-analysis.
The findings revealed that FOMO is one of the influential variables in the consumer decision-making process, with personal traits and tendencies and pre-purchase psychological factors identified as independent variables, while purchasing and consumption behaviors, post-purchase psychological factors, and social media-related behaviors were identified as dependent variables. Finally, the FOMO model from the perspective of consumer behavior, based on the meta-analysis method, was presented.
